Affirmations & Meditations

Matted Works on Paper

Each of these paintings were created as a meditation. They filled the studio with peace and simplicity at times when the outside world appeared quite complex and stressful.

From the Affirmations Series…

Each one began with an affirmative word and related quote, now mostly hidden under the paint. They are all 8” x 8” on mixed media paper, in 12” x 12” mats.

Affirmations #4: Flow
$165.00

8” x 8”

Original acrylic, mixed media painting (on mixed media paper) in a 12” x 12” mat with a protective sleeve.

Affirmations #4: Flow was the fourth completed painting of the series of Affirmations. There was a comfortable flow of brushstrokes, scrapes, pencil lines and marks. The angles seemed to naturally occur and the two open circles came together as if they had already established a relationship with one another.

The word, Flow, was written within the painting, early on, along with a Flow related quote. The chosen word/quote must have had an unintended effect on the creative process. I experienced a wonderful creative flow in developing this it. You can see how the words/quotes have disappeared under the paint. Here’s what’s written beneath the paint…

The quote: “Water is the softest of all things, yet it is the most powerful. The ocean patiently allows all things to flow into it. It is always flexible. The Tao is not about grasping, but allowing, like water.” ― Wayne Dyer

Affirmations #4: Flow is signed and dated on the back.

Affirmations #9: Joy
$165.00

8” x 8”

Original acrylic painting with papers, pencil, and colored pencils on mixed media paper. In a 12” x 12” mat with a protective sleeve.

Affirmations #9: Joy - the ninth in the series of Affirmations. I began playing with this one by using the leftover paint, on the palette, from working on a canvas painting. Then I just continued the fun with more paint, colored pencils, pencils, and papers. It was a joy to create.

Barely seen beneath the layers of paint, is written the word, Joy, and the following quote:

The quote: “We are shaped by our thoughts. We become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.” (Unknown author, often falsely attributed to Buddha)

Affirmations #9: Joy is signed and dated on the back.

Affirmations #5: Love
$165.00

8” x 8”

Original acrylic, mixed media painting (on mixed media paper) in a 12” x 12” mat with a protective sleeve.

Affirmations #5: Love was the fifth of the series of Affirmations to be completed. They began as a group of 12, taped to the wall as one unit. Because of the original placement of the ink lines and drips on this one, it was much more of a challenge to develop than the first four. So, for much of the time I was focused on toning down those lines, especially the one right down the middle. I worked with what I had and played and played with marks, color, and circles to get what you see here now.

The word, Love and a love themed quote were written on the image early on. As you can see, they have disappeared under paint and colored pencils. I kept the concept of Love in mind while working on this one. These are the words that lie beneath the paint…

The quote: “Let us always meet each other with a smile, for the smile is the beginning of love.” ― Mother Theresa

Affirmations #5: Love is signed and dated on the back.

Affirmations #3: Wholeness
$165.00

8” x 8”

Original acrylic, mixed media painting (on mixed media paper) in a 12” x 12” mat with a protective sleeve.

Affirmations #3: Wholeness was the third of the Affirmations to be completed. It was a joy to play with this one, as I added to it with paint, colored pencil, and marks. I chose the two circles from my growing collection of pre-cut shapes. They seemed to fit so well together and I loved the way the page took on a glow.

The word, Wholeness and a quote on the subject was written within the image but is now barely seen under the paint. Although I had no intention for those words to influence the painting, I know that they definitely did in this one.

The quote: “Your very nature is being part of larger and larger spheres of wholeness.” - Jon Kabat-Zinn

Affirmations #3: Wholeness is signed and dated on the back.

Affirmations #7: Compassion
$165.00

8” x 8”

Original acrylic, mixed media painting (on mixed media paper) in a 12” x 12” mat with a protective sleeve.

Affirmations #7: Compassion, the seventh in the series. Although I had painted on this in the light of day, I ended up developing it further at night, in poor lighting. (Not my usual process. I love working with natural light.) I enjoyed playing with some colored pencils and papers. The next morning, I was surprised to see it in day light. It only seemed to need minimal additions to bring it to completion.

This was started with the word, Compassion, and then I added a quote about compassion before developing the image. Now the words barely show through at all.

The quote: “Our task must be to feel ourselves by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty.” ― Albert Einstein

Affirmations #7: Compassion is signed and dated on the back.

Affirmations #8: Empowerment
$145.00

8” x 8”

Original acrylic, mixed media painting (on mixed media paper) in a 12” x 12” mat with a protective sleeve.

Affirmations #8: Empowerment - the eighth in the series. This became a fun and playful experience with paint, colored pencils, and water color crayons. No circles, squares, or paper pieces. BUT… a week later, it didn’t feel right. It didn’t feel complete. I guess I was empowered to continue.

The word, Empowerment, and a related quote are somewhat showing through underneath the paint. This is the quote I chose for this painting.

The quote: “You were born with wings. Why prefer to crawl?” ― Rumi

Affirmations #8: Empowerment is signed and dated on the back.

From the Series of Meditations…

These 12 began as a group. Then they were developed individually. Each one is a
4-1/2” x 6” painting on watercolor paper, in an 8” x 10” mats.

Meditations #2
$55.00

4-1/2” x 6”

Original mixed-media painting on watercolor paper - acrylic, pencil, charcoal, pen, papers, and threads.
In a 9” x 12” mat with a protective sleeve.

Meditations #2 - The second of twelve small paintings in the Meditations series. I have found both a peace and flow in working on the pieces in this series. The paper collage elements, colored pencil scribbles, and stitches are the last additions applied to the painted surface. This is a process I am happy to return to again and again. (Which is just what I do in this series.)

Meditations #11
$65.00

4-1/2” x 6”

Original mixed-media painting on watercolor paper - acrylic, pencils, charcoal, pen, papers, and threads.
In a 9” x 12” mat with a protective sleeve.

Meditations #11 - Number 11 in a series of 12. I so enjoyed the process of creating the color variations in the background of this one. I wanted the circle and threads to be bold and as striking as the colors that lay beneath… which called for the black thread and paper circle, with just a touch of the red.

Meditations #9
$65.00

4-1/2” x 6”

Original mixed-media painting on watercolor paper - acrylic, pencils, charcoal, pen, papers, and threads.
In a 9” x 12” mat with a protective sleeve.

Meditations #9 - The ninth painting in the series of 12. Even after creating nine of these paintings, I continued to feel the love for the meditative process of creating them. With this one, I wanted to swap out the red paper elements for a yellow... but in the end I loved adding the red dot. And I chose the red thread because of the way it showed up next to the yellow.

Meditations #4
$65.00

4-1/2” x 6”

Original mixed-media painting on watercolor paper - acrylic, pencil, charcoal, pen, papers, and threads.
In a 9” x 12” mat with a protective sleeve.

Meditations #4 - This is the fourth of the 12 Meditations. The painting, like others in the series, began with pencil writing, intended to be covered by the mixed media layers. You can see the presence of the hand writing beneath the layers. The darker strip of color naturally appeared down below. And I ended up adding extra threads on this one.

Meditations #10
$65.00

4-1/2” x 6”

Original mixed-media painting on watercolor paper - acrylic, pencils, charcoal, pen, papers, and threads.
In a 9” x 12” mat with a protective sleeve.

Meditations #10 - Although this painting was the tenth one completed in the Meditations series, it was actually slated to be completed last. You see, I had taped 12 pieces of watercolor paper to the closet door in the studio and began working on them as a group, by writing mantras and quotes on each, scribbling with charcoal, pencil and pen. Then I worked on them individually in order from the top left, across and down. This one was in the 12th spot but fell to the floor and made it to the work table ahead of a couple of the others. I switched to the black thread instead of the red and played with creating a line of stitching made without any thread.

From the Series of Morning meditations…

The first 6 of the Morning Meditations were created in a sketchbook before I shifted to working on watercolor paper. Each one is a 6” x 8-1/4” painting, in a 9” x 12” mat.

Morning Meditations #8
$120.00

6” x 8-1/4”

Original acrylic painting with papers on watercolor paper. In a 9” x 12” mat with a protective sleeve.

Morning Meditation #8 - It was clear in working on this one that a series was developing… with painted backgrounds and collaged pieces. I embraced the meditative painting process. In fact, just thinking of the experience of these Morning Meditations puts my entire being into a wonderful feeling of Ahhhhh!!

Morning Meditations #7
$120.00

6” x 8-1/4”

Original acrylic painting with papers and threads on watercolor paper. In a 9” x 12” mat with a protective sleeve.

Morning Meditation #7 - After completing 6 pages of daily morning meditation paintings in my sketchbook, as daily morning meditations, I decided to work outside of the sketchbook. This became the first of seven in the series on watercolor paper. With a single sheet of the paper, it became much easier to add the stitching of red threads onto the image.

Morning Meditations #10
$120.00

6” x 8-1/4”

Original acrylic painting with papers and threads on watercolor paper. In a 9” x 12” mat with a protective sleeve.

Morning Meditation #10 - I could have stopped after painting the background, yet I experienced such a lightness of being as I continued to add touches of color. Although I had no need to add anything at that point, I also had no need to stop playing. So the paper cutouts and stitching were added along with using a toothbrush to spray drops of paint onto the page. The process clearly became the focus. I have a soft spot for this one. It reminds me of the calm after a snow storm.

Morning Meditations #9
$120.00

6” x 8-1/4”

Original acrylic painting with papers and threads on watercolor paper. In a 9” x 12” mat with a protective sleeve.

Morning Meditation #9 - With this one, it was easy for me to realize how this series is not just a creative meditation experience but an exercise in letting go on multiple levels. I let go of needing to edit these or spending more time and focus to develop them further. I enjoyed the freedom of making messy marks and embracing the rough edges.

Morning Meditations #12
$120.00

6” x 8-1/4”

Original acrylic painting with papers on watercolor paper. In a 9” x 12” mat with a protective sleeve.

Morning Meditation #12 - This was the last of the Morning Meditations completed in 2020. It felt as if these painting meditations had been carrying me forward to the end of the year in an internal preparation process for 2021. Number 12 seemed so different from the 11 earlier pieces in the series. And although I missed the inclusion of threads when they weren’t included, this needed to remain thread-less.

Morning Meditations #13
$120.00

6” x 8-1/4”

Original acrylic painting with collaged paper elements, on watercolor paper. In a 9” x 12” mat with a protective sleeve.

Morning Meditation #13 - This was the last of the Morning Meditations and the only one of the series completed in 2021. But shortly afterwards, I began the 12 piece series of Meditations inspired by my desire to continue with another group of meditative paintings.
