Transcriptions #28: Duo Pacis

$0.00

24" x 18" x 3/4”

Original mixed media painting on canvas

Duo Pacis ("Two of Peace" in Latin) is built around two prayers for peace: The Peace Prayer of Saint Francis and an ancient mantra from a Hindu Upanishad text, Om Asato Ma Sadgamaya. Both seem to be very similar in focus.

You’ll find two cutouts in this highly textured painting. The book, made from canvas cloth, is recessed within the top opening and sewn in place. The cut canvas in the window below is folded like an open shutter. This cutout houses an element I call a "prayer pocket"… a tiny 2" x 1-1/2" folded piece of painted canvas.

The color palette and painting process was something of a departure for me. I was stretching my creative muscles and trying something new.

Transcriptions #17: Om Shanti

12” x 12” x ¾”

Original mixed media painting on canvas

Om Shanti Shanti Shanti is a peace mantra. Om is the primordial sound of the universe. Shanti means peace or bliss and is generally repeated three times to represent the whole being... the body, the mind, and the speech.

This is one of several "Peace Paintings" in the Transcriptions Series. We can always use more prayers of peace going out into the world.

A piece of painted canvas cloth becomes a backdrop for the homemade book sewn onto the canvas. The book holds the general meaning behind the words of the mantra.

The stretched canvas is textured and painted and the sides are painted to match the front of the canvas. It is signed and dated on the side.

Transcriptions #23: Peace Prayers

18" x 18" x 1.5”

Original mixed media painting on canvas

Peace Wall has been inspired by the Western Wall in Jerusalem. It’s the third time I’ve referenced the Western Wall in the Transcriptions series. This one is something of a close-up look at the stones and the inserted prayers for peace.

The ancient wall receives millions of visitors each year, people who have traveled from all over the world to pray. I would think that many of them leave prayers of peace stuffed into the cracks and crevices between the stones.

This time I used two pieces of canvas cloth, sewed them together, and left an opening in which to insert the rolled up pieces of painted cloth. The shape of the stones are drawn with pencil and then painted with acrylics and a matte medium. The handmade book is sewn through to the textured and painted back canvas. The sides are painted to match the painting and it is signed and dated on the side of the canvas.
