$0.00

20” x 16” x ¾”

Original mixed media painting on canvas

This painting features a prayer, referred to as The Priestly Blessing, in four different languages: Hebrew, Latin, English, and ancient Phoenician. The handwritten text on the lower part of the canvas is a translation of the prayer into ancient Phoenician. Here is the prayer in English and Latin:

"May the Lord bless you and keep you
May the light of GOD's face shine on you and give you grace.
May GOD turn towards you and give you peace. Amen."

"Benedicat tibi Dominus et custodiat te
Ostendat Dominus faciem suam tibi et misereatur tui
Convertat Dominus vultum suum ad te et det tibi pacem."

The attached book is made from canvas cloth and is sewn onto the textured and painted stretched canvas. The three scrolls are held in place by a piece of canvas cloth woven through slits cut into the background.

Transcriptions #23: Peace Prayers

18" x 18" x 1.5”

Original mixed media painting on canvas

Peace Wall has been inspired by the Western Wall in Jerusalem. It’s the third time I’ve referenced the Western Wall in the Transcriptions series. This one is something of a close-up look at the stones and the inserted prayers for peace.

The ancient wall receives millions of visitors each year, people who have traveled from all over the world to pray. I would think that many of them leave prayers of peace stuffed into the cracks and crevices between the stones.

This time I used two pieces of canvas cloth, sewed them together, and left an opening in which to insert the rolled up pieces of painted cloth. The shape of the stones are drawn with pencil and then painted with acrylics and a matte medium. The handmade book is sewn through to the textured and painted back canvas. The sides are painted to match the painting and it is signed and dated on the side of the canvas.

Transcriptions #29: Prayer for Humanity

24" x 24" x 1.5”

Original mixed media painting on canvas

I came across a prayer written by the Indian Buddhist sage, Shantideva, 700 A.D. It is the Bodhisattva Prayer for Humanity. That prayer became the inspiration for this painting. I love these words:

“May I be a guard for those who need protection
A guide for those on the path
May I be a lamp in the darkness, a resting place for the weary
A healing medicine for all who are sick
A vase of plenty, a tree of miracles
And for the boundless multitudes of living beings
May I bring sustenance and awakening
Enduring like the earth and sky
Until all beings are freed from sorrow
And all are awakened.”

The large square canvas cloth is textured with paper and gauze. It’s attached to a painted gallery wrapped canvas. The open scroll seemed the perfect way to display the beautiful words of this prayer. The scroll is sewn through to the back canvas and the sides are painted to match the painting. It is signed and dated on the side of the canvas.
