The focus of Kaddish 1 is on the Hebrew prayer often referred to as the Mourner’s Kaddish. I have always loved the flow of rhythmic sounds as these Hebrew words are recited aloud, particularly in a group. There is a cadence to the recitation that becomes a shared journey.
First, the strips of canvas cloth were prepared to become the lines of text to be used in the painting. I found myself creating enough strips to produce multiple paintings. Hence, the name Kaddish 1. The strips appear on the surface of a painted and prepared cloth square which is sewn onto the textured back canvas.
While developing the painting, I never had a clear vision of where it was going. The painting seemed to keep showing me the next step. You may notice that the text strips are not lying flat. Each one has an area that is raised up (one of the accompanying images shows it pretty clearly).
The final element was adding the lines of text (English transliteration) around the edges of the painting.

Peace Kaddish is one of a small group of Transcription Mini’s. Each piece has a constructed and sewn 6” x 6” canvas cloth painting. The painted square is then stitched onto a textured 8” x 10” gallery wrapped canvas. These Mini’s were inspired by the close-up photos I’ve taken of paintings in the Transcriptions Series.
The focus of this Mini is on the the Hebrew prayer of the Kaddish.
The canvas is signed and dated on the side.

Kaddish was inspired by a pretty clear image that appeared to me in the middle of the night. I saw the cloth strips attached to the canvas with the words of a prayer written in a side-wards fashion. I immediately knew I wanted to use the Hebrew prayer of the Kaddish for this painting.
The 4 strips of canvas cloth have been stitched to the cloth square but only two thirds of the way down. This leaves the bottom third of each strip hanging loose. The handmade book and the background square are stitched onto the painted and textured stretched canvas. The sides are painted to match the painting and it is signed and dated on the side of the canvas.
